Today we’re going into this The Long Dark Interloper Guide, which is made to show how to improve your chances of surviving while playing on the Interloper mode which was released during the Vigilant Trespass update. If you’re new to The Long Dark, I would highly recommend playing on the other difficulty modes before trying the Interloper difficulty, as it’s very important to have a working knowledge of the game and the maps before attempting the hardest difficulty. I try to go over some of the tips and tricks that have helped me survive during my Interloper playthrough, and playing Interloper I’ve quickly realized that you cannot play Interloper like you would play a casual sandbox, or even Stalker. There are certain things you need to do, at least until you can become self sufficient by obtaining improvised tools so that you can continue to get meat, gut, and hide.
We’re going to be talking about food conservation, avoiding danger, temperature management, time management, possibly goal priority, scavenging and more.
This guide was meant to be quick and succinct, but if there are any additional guides you would like, or any points in the guide you would like me to expand upon, feel free to let me know in the comments section. Thanks!

ABOUT: THE LONG DARK:
The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness. There are no zombies — only you, the cold, and everything Mother Nature can throw at you.
Current Game Features
The Early Access version of The Long Dark features the game’s non-narrative Survival Sandbox mode. The game will leave Early Access one we launch Episode One of our Story Mode. All Season One episodes are included in the cost of Early Access.
No hand holding! The game challenges players to think for themselves by providing the information but never the answers. You have to earn the right to survive.
Permadeath! See how long you can survive, check your standing on the global Leaderboards, then head back in and push yourself to survive longer.
Monitor your Calorie count, Hunger and Thirst, Fatigue, and Body Temperature. Maintain your overall Condition if you want to survive. Let yourself weaken and any small threat may lead to your death.
Over 30 square kms of wilderness to explore (and with more regions coming!). Mystery Lake, Coastal Highway, Desolation Point, Pleasant Valley, and more, all interconnected and each with dozens of explorable locations.
Dynamic weather, wildlife, and time of day, all with an impact on how you choose to survive.
Over 100 gear items including clothing, tools like hatchets and rifles, first aid equipment, foodstuffs, light sources like lanterns and flares, and firestarting equipment.
Hunt Deer, Snare Rabbits, and watch for Crows as they can signify the presence of animal, or human, corpses that can be vital sources of Supplies. Wolves are territorial and will defend their territory, or stalk you if they catch your scent. If you let them get too close, you may find yourself in a desperate struggle to survive. Be on the lookout for Black Bears, as they roam the landscape in search of food.
Harvest Wood for fuel, maintain your Gear and Clothing, and keep your Knife, Hatchet, and Rifle in top shape as they will save your life!
Harvest Medicinal plants like Old Man’s Beard Lichen, Rose Hips, Reishi Mushrooms.
Deep First Aid system featuring many afflictions including: Sprains, Blood Loss, Infection Risk, Infection, Food Poisoning, Dysentery, and more.
Craft Snares, First Aid items, Repair your Clothing and Tools, and Harvest raw materials from the environment, as you do your best to become self-sufficient.
…and much more!

But what about the cold over time?
I'm about 80ish days into Interloper. I've already cheated a few times by moving my save files around, but I've played hundreds of hours on lower difficulties. I am not really enjoying the Interloper difficulty. I have moose cloaks and high condition clothes and the cold is still so punishing. It's also so frustrating to have game run away when arrows are so scarce. I really wish they would have allowed firearms in Interloper.
Umm exCUSE ME did they literally start you off starving and on 80% condition? Damn, interloper is a bitch
I'm not sure what's happened with the difficulty levels since early dev but it's kind of ruining the game imo. in 3 settings you find way too much stuff all the time, and in the one setting where freezing actually matters nothing exists. not one knife in all of canada… give me a break.
IF YOU ARE GONNA PLAY THIS ON INTERLOPER MODE!!!!!!… YOU… ARE… GOING… TO… HAVE… A BAAAAAAAD TIIIIME! ;O
Shit I haven't watched this yet and I just went in and survived 1 day and died by a big ass wolf about gave me a damn heart attack but I had some good shit like a prybar, good clothing, loads of food as well D,=
Oh my god there are 69 comments, 🙁 aww I just ruined it now there are 70
wherry helpful video thx for the tips
I started straight at interloper when I first got the game. I switched down a difficulty once i got 1 day of survival on interloper. Was fun.
nice vid. You forgot to mention that you also need 1 piece of cloth per improvised tool when at forge. no cloth = no tools and you really don't wonna end up tearing a piece of clothing for that…. Also read few comments below regarding the Magnify glass being not reliable. The mag lens is a late game tool one of the best in the game for the long survival. As your fire skills improve the lens will become more and more reliable. From level 3 fire skill onwards is the only tool you might want to use to start a fire unless in an emergency where there is no sunlight. Planning ahead is key once you reach the late game
Great Great guide! I like to play in voyager. Although I already knew these, your video is veeeery well made. Thanks for it!
Has anyone found a hunting knife or hatchet in interloper difficulty? If not (I'm assuming not) is it possible to craft the bow and wolfskin jacket with the improvised knife?
Another useful tip is: fires will thaw the carcasses of animals, allowing for harvesting pre-tools. I'm not sure if thawing the carcass out and then using tools to harvest will make it faster, but it makes it possible before you get the hacksaw or improvised tools in interloper mode. I took a shot in the dark doing this on my first interloper mode, got me through the first few days.
I find hunger to be a little crazy. I average 3000 calories per day. Survived 2 days and then died of starvation on the 3rd day?! That makes no sense >.>
this gamemode isn't even that hard if you're not surviving exclusively on timberwolf mountain. if you like the feeling of true pain and grit, load up a game on interloper and spawn on timberwolf mountain and stay only there without leaving (not that it would be possible without freezing to death). you won't last 2 days. it is the ultimate hardcore experience.
I dont play, but this was very helpful and fun to watch!!
sleeping for more than 8 hours will get you dehydrated though
it would be best to sleep 8 hours, drink and then sleep some more if you still need it
You're one of the only gamers who puts up real detail/game mechanic vids. Keep it up!
Nice video, definitely the best guide on YouTube so far!
Thank you Gray, all those tips I plan on implementing during my adventures. Could you perhaps offer advice on Hunting and Foraging in Interloper Mode. BTW just watched you're series and I must say I was very impressed with the run. Keep up the good work ,Hope to see more TLD from you.
In your opinion what is the best spawn in Interloper?
Thanks Gray it really helps players like me who love survival games and are always looking for a bigger challenge thanks bro FYI u are one of my favorite youtubers keep up the good work!!!
Dude, please just play more, I'm just loving your style. nothing to compare with accurrize. please just do it 😉
How do you solve the mine if you don't find a torch? I ended up using about 14 matches to get through there. Was only able to craft a torch after I reached the Log Sort and Fishing Camp.
I got stuck in the Ravine map and was able to use a makeshift snow shelter by collecting enough sticks and sleeping by the fire in a wind sheltered area to remove my exhaustion, highly recommend it. Note: I don't recommend going that way since I was very prepared with 8 fish and as many coal but still ended up dying after i reached the dam.
Wow, man, that is a long list of very useful tips! Well done! Thank you for the good content
please make a follow up!
